This is What You Can Expect During a Routine Blood Panel

Preventive Care for Seniors

Many doctors recommend routine blood panels or annual blood work so they can get a comprehensive view of what’s going on with your health. This is best practice because the tests identify problems before they turn into serious diseases or they can just explain why you’ve been feeling just a little off. Even if you don’t feel as though something’s wrong, these tests can establish a baseline and help your doctor prepare a preventive care plan. Blood work should be a yearly priority, but your doctor may choose to order blood work sooner if you’re experiencing unusual, persistent symptoms or you don’t have access to your medical history.

What to expect during a routine blood test?

If you need blood work, your primary care provider will refer you to another department to complete testing. Generally, a nurse or phlebotomist will ask which arm you prefer to use before cleaning the area with an alcohol wipe. However, if you have small or rolling veins, the nurse may have to choose the other arm to get the blood. Next, you’ll squeeze your hand into a fist while they tie an elastic band around your arm. After that, you can relax your arm and the nurse will insert the sterile needle and collect your blood in labeled test tubes. This whole process can be done in a few minutes and doesn’t hurt much.

What do blood tests check for?

Blood tests are completely normal diagnostic tests that can show disorders, infections, or immune problems. They can often illuminate underlying problems like thyroid dysfunction, prediabetes, abnormal cholesterol levels, liver disease, and more. Some common blood tests doctors use include:

  • A complete blood count (CBC)–  This gives your PCP an overview of your general health. This test gives a clear view of your oxygen, immune defense, clotting factors, and more. Abnormal CBC levels may indicate nutrient deficiencies, heart conditions, cancer, tissue inflammation, or bone marrow problems.
  • Basic metabolic panel (BMP)– This group of tests measures chemicals in your bloodstream so your doctor understands how much blood glucose, electrolytes, and minerals you have. This test can detect things like cancer, anemia, respiratory or metabolic issues, or coronary heart disease. However, it’s generally used to identify kidney disease, diabetes, or hormone imbalances.
  • Complete metabolic panel (CMP)– This test is very similar to the BMP, but it also analyzes liver function. The CMP identifies things like liver damage, cirrhosis, and other liver and gallbladder issues.

This is far from all of the blood work your MD365 ® doctor could order, but your PCP may not decide to run tests like the DHEA-sulfate serum test or the C-reactive protein test if they don’t see a reason to.

Potential Blood Work Results

You will get the results for most blood work within 24 hours although the complete metabolic panel can take longer. Certain tests require you to fast for an accurate result though. Food and beverages can affect your blood levels to change because they have vitamins, proteins, minerals, and other nutrients. Some tests that require you to fast for 8-12 hours include:

  • Cholesterol tests
  • Blood sugar tests
  • Kidney function tests
  • Liver function tests
  • Glucose tests
  • Basic metabolic panel
