Get Your Standard DOT Physical Today

Primary Care Provider

Some careers require certain types of physicals and screenings in order to ensure everyone’s safety. If you are a vehicle operator, such as a truck or bus driver, you will most likely need to get a regular DOT physical each year. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires this checkup for commercial vehicle drivers. Our primary physicians at MD365 will examine your health and ensure that you meet the standards to perform your job safely and efficiently.

What Is a DOT Physical?

DOT stands for Department of Transportation. It is mandated by the FMCSA, and this physical determines if a driver is physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to operate a commercial motor vehicle. You need to pass a DOT physical in order to maintain a valid commercial driver’s license. Our primary physicians will check your vital signs, review your medical history, and perform a required hands-on physical examination.

What a DOT Physical Covers

At MD365®, we will conduct a comprehensive physical exam. Our team will check your general appearance, eyes, ears, heart, mouth, throat, lungs, chest, nervous system, hernias, extremities, back, and spine.

Drivers must be able to perceive a “forced whisper” at a distance of 5 feet or less. If you have a hearing aid, the same requirement is necessary.

You must have at least a 20/40 acuity in each eye with or without correction. You are also required to have at least a 70” peripheral in the horizontal meridian, measured in each eye.

This simple test takes a sample of your urine. It looks for underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes and the earlier stages of liver and kidney diseases.

Blood Pressure/Pulse Rate

We check for high blood pressure or irregular beats. Your blood pressure must be below 140/90 on the date of the exam.

Our primary physicians check for murmurs and extra sounds. And we ensure that your pacemaker works properly if you have one.

What to Bring to a DOT Physical

All drivers should bring a complete list of all their medications— that includes the doses and your prescribers’ name and addresses. You can also complete page one of the exam to save time for when you come to our office.

If you own glasses, contact lenses, or hearing aids, bring those in. If you have heart-related issues, bring a letter from your cardiologist that states that you are safe to drive a commercial vehicle. It should also outline your medical history and medications that you are currently taking. If you have diabetes, you will need the most recent results of a lab test called a Hemoglobin A1C and your blood sugar logs.

Depending on your medical history, there will be different documentations that will be required. Give MD365® a call before your appointment to make sure that you have all the necessary paperwork.
